Haruna Lee
Sasha Arutuynova
Haruna Lee is an experimental playwright and performance maker based in Brooklyn, NY. Their plays are often an urge to honor their mother’s broken English, to translate experiences despite the gulf of cultures, and to know their own psychic blood and guts while communing through epic imagery and ritual. Plays include Suicide Forest, 49 DAYS, Memory Retrograde, and DADBOT. Lee is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, an Obie Award for Playwriting and Conception, a Susan Smith Blackburn Prize finalist and Special Commendation, Steinberg Playwright Award, Creative Capital Award, and FCA Grants to Artists Award. Their writing has been published by Broadway Licensing, Yale’s Theater Magazine, Table Work Press, and 53rd State Press. As a performer & collaborator, they’ve worked alongside Lynn Nottage, Mac Wellman, Taylor Mac, Aya Ogawa, Ralph Lee, Anohni—among many others. They teach at Hunter College and Yale University.
