Migdalia Cruz

Deborah Lopez Studio

A woman with light skin and long, dark curly hair wearing glasses smiles lightly at the camera, her face turned a little to her right. Blurred shadows cast by windowpanes against a light background are behind her.

MIGDALIA CRUZ, a Bronx-born theater-maker and educator, is the 2026 DGF Lifetime Achievement Award winner, 2025 Re-Focus/Roundabout resident, and the 2023 DGF Legacy artist. Her credits include over 60 works, across 12 countries, in 150 venues, such as the National Theatre of Greece, Houston Grand Opera, BAM, and the Goodman. Her awards include two NEAs, a McKnight, and the 2013 Helen Merrill Distinguished Playwright. Cruz's mentor, María Irene Fornés, at INTAR and her residency at Latino Chicago Theater Company nurtured her voice. She co-chairs the DGF Playwriting Fellows, mentors the Latinx Playwrights’ Circle, and has taught at many universities and theaters including Princeton, NYU, Brava, SMU, and with the Fornés Institute.

Migdalia is an alumna of New Dramatists, and a member of The Tent. In 2026, her Macbeth will have been produced at the Magic Theatre, Shakespeare By The Sea, James Madison University, and Connecticut College. Along with her translation of Richard III, it was turned into a podcast by Next Chapter/PlayOn Podcasts.

Her newest anthology, The Impossible Plays of Migdalia Cruz, was published in 2024 (Tripwire Harlot Press).
